A Light Rigid or LR licence applies to vehicles with a GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) of more than 4.5 tonnes. LR licence holders can drive vehicles up to 8 tonnes which can carry more than 12 adults, including the vehicle's driver.

Participants in this course with Jason Kemp's Advanced Driver Training learn the necessary skills to operate either an automatic or synchromesh manual transmission. At the completion of the course, you will be assessed and (providing you meet all testing criteria) certified to drive light rigid vehicles.

Before testing for this licence class, you must:

  • Have held a C-class licence for more than 1 year (open licence only. Learners and P1 licence holders are not eligible).
  • Pass a Drivers Knowledge Test at the RMS (Roads & Maritime Service, formerly known as the RTA).
  • Pass an eyesight test.
  • Complete training in the HVCBA (Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment) system and pass a driving test.
